Hi, my name is Dr. Annye Rothenberg. I have been a licensed child/parent psychologist for over 25 years. I specialize in counseling parents with common but challenging child rearing problems focusing on babies through 10 year olds. In order to help more people, I have been writing a series of books. The first six focus on 3, 4 and 5 year-olds. Now, I have started a new series for kindergarten through third graders. The books for preschoolers as well as those for elementary school children all have a story for children and a manual for parents that show how to work through these child rearing issues. What I describe in my books are time-proven methods that I have used in successfully helping over 2,000 families. If you have any of these issues, you'll find the books helpful. Also included for you on this web site are many articles on everyday child rearing concerns. I invite you to enjoy this site.

The second book in this series for four to nine-year -olds is Mom and Dad Are Always So Busy. It helps parents and children find the best ways to spend time together.

"This newest book by Dr. Rothenberg is a detailed and practical guide for busy working parents on how to juggle their commitments to their job and more importantly, how to foster a meaningful connection with their children and nurture that relationship for many years to come. This book has many specifics for parents from how to talk to their children in a respectful, empathetic manner so their children will feel connected, to how to set the daily routine in the household so all family members can work together seamlessly. I strongly recommend this book to all busy parents — stay-at-home or working outside the home — and to all the professionals who guide them."

Why Can't I Be the Boss of Me? Cover art

First Book in the Elementary School Series

The first book for kindergarten to third graders is Why Can't I Be the Boss of Me? It helps children understand why they can't just have their way. And parents will learn why their children think they can. It gives the steps to take so children can accept the leadership role of their parents while enabling the child's reasoning and decision making skills to grow.

“Dr. Annye Rothenberg has done it again. She has created a colorful, engaging story about an eight-year-old boy who is used to ruling the roost. She guides parents to adopt a less permissive and more leader-like approach to child-rearing, and at the same time, teaches children that households are calmer and happier when parents are in charge. Parents who struggle with getting their child to behave appropriately will find valuable words of wisdom from this experienced child psychologist.

I Want To Make Friends

The fifth book in the series, I Want To Make Friends, shows how young children can make friends and be a good friend. Through a story for children and a comprehensive parent guidance section, kids and parents will learn the basics of friendship as well as how to deal with common peer problems, such as bossiness, teasing, aggression and being reserved, self-conscious or thin-skinned.

I Want To Make Friends is a wonderfully written and much-needed resource. As she does in her previous four books, Dr. Rothenberg includes a practical parents’ guide as well as an engagingly illustrated story for children that shows what a child has to do to become a good friend. Parents will learn how a child’s personality and experiences shape his or her social skills. The valuable suggestions and concrete examples for parents will be effective as they help their children develop friendships. This is a well- thought-out book on a topic of frequent concern. I'm eager to recommend it to my patients and their families.”

I Don't Want To Go To The Toilet

The fourth book in the series, I Don't Want To Go To The Toilet deals with the challenges of toilet training young children who are uninterested, reluctant, resistant, or fearful of the toilet. Through a story about a child who doesn't want to stop playing to go pee pee and a second story about a child who doesn't want to have his poop in the toilet, these children's lack of interest and worries are successfully addressed. The parent guidance section covers the complete process of toilet training and how to resolve the problematic issues.

“In this fourth book of her parenting series, Dr. Rothenberg tackles toilet training. As always, she does this with sound practical advice and a dose of good humor. This book is valuable because Dr. Rothenberg couples developmentally appropriate principles with practical tools. Among the many guides for toilet training, this book is unique because it sets the stage for cooperation between kids and parents through its two engaging children’s stories (peeing and pooping). The parents’ section provides a treasure trove of advice for what to expect, what to say, and what to do to make the process not only more fun, but also more likely to succeed.”

“The content of this book is wonderful! This is one book that all parents of young children should read to their children, with the perfect take-home message for both. It’s the best of both worlds – an entertaining book for children that successfully introduces them to healthy eating and an informed guide for parents that points out the challenges that food issues can create.
